Reading the cut scores
- Each section stands alone. SFPD spells it out: each part is passed on its own; scores are not averaged.
- Cuts vary, video most: from 55 / 65 / 65 at Santa Clara SO to 65 / 70 / 70 at Oakland PD and Salem PD. A video score of 60 to 64 passes in San Francisco and fails in Oakland.
- Some use FrontLine as a waiver. The LAPD and SDPD run their own written tests and accept a FrontLine score instead. LAPD accepts a score that meets city criteria; San Diego asks for video 55, reading 65, writing 65, within 6 months of applying.
Myth: one passing score works everywhere
The score travels; the pass doesn't. The same section scores go to every department on your order, and each applies its own cut and its own time window. A score that stays on file for 1 year can already be too old for a department with a shorter window, like San Diego.
California: FrontLine or PELLETB
California's statewide rule is PELLETB or another validated reading and writing test (POST Regulation 1951), so FrontLine is an accepted alternative there, not the default. 63 agencies had open FrontLine jobs. SFPD and Oakland take either test. SFPD's PELLETB rule: T-score of 42 or higher, taken within the last 2 years. Ventura County and the Santa Clara County Sheriff require FrontLine.
More detail on the California page and the LAPD page.
Oregon, Ohio and Florida
- Oregon: Portland and Salem require FrontLine. Salem wants the results attached with ORPAT; in Portland, bachelor's degree holders and lateral officers do not take the NTN test.
- Ohio: 121 agencies listed FrontLine jobs, Toledo among them.
- Florida: Orlando uses FrontLine as the city's civil service exam. The statewide test before a Florida academy is a different one, the CJBAT. More on the Florida page.
Checking a department not listed here
- Open the testing company's law enforcement job list and the job itself: the posting names the tests it requires.
- Find the cut score on the department's own recruiting page; the job list does not show it.
- Add every department you want before you test. Afterward, only newly opened jobs can be added.

FrontLine departments, quick answers
What police departments use the NTN test?
About 350 agencies in 31 states, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands listed it as required on NTN's job board on Oct 21, 2026, most of them in Ohio, Oregon and California. Larger ones include Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, Baltimore, Aurora and Orlando.
Does my FrontLine score go to more than one department?
Yes. One sitting sends your scores to every department on your order. Departments added later cost $15 each, and only jobs opened since your test qualify.
What FrontLine score does SFPD require?
Video 60, writing 70, reading 70, each passed on its own. SFPD also accepts the PELLETB.
Do California departments accept the NTN test?
Some do. The state standard is the PELLETB or another validated test; SFPD, Oakland and the Santa Clara County Sheriff use FrontLine, and LAPD and San Diego accept it in place of their own tests.
